Environmental, Social and Governance

At The New York Times Company, we strive to work in a way that helps society and protects the environment.

The New York Times makes an essential contribution to the world through our commitment to providing independent and trustworthy journalism.

Our mission — to seek the truth and help people understand the world — is rooted in our belief that great journalism has the power to make each reader’s life richer and more fulfilling, and all of society stronger and more just.

Our journalism does this by providing people with the information they need to fully participate in democracy, the context they need to understand and debate critical issues, and the transparency and accountability they rely on to trust that governments and other powerful institutions are acting in the public interest.

As we do this work, we are committed to providing a diverse and inclusive workplace for our staff, to considering our impact on the environment, and to supporting the broader journalistic community and the rights that make it possible to bring the public the information it needs. Below are highlights of some of our environmental, social and governance work.

Environmental Impact

At The Times, we recognize the effects of climate change, and we are taking action to reduce our own impact. We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint and identifying opportunities to improve the sustainability of our business operations.

Social

We are committed to building a rewarding workplace for our employees and contributing to society through thoughtful business practices.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Making The Times a more diverse, equitable and inclusive place to work is core to our strategy and a top priority for our journalism, our business and our company. In recent years, we’ve invested in hiring and developing talent across the company, and we offer a number of benefits and programs that support our progress toward building a place where people of all backgrounds can do the best work of their careers.

Corporate Social Responsibility

We support journalism groups that strengthen independent journalism where it’s most needed. We are also committed to helping people through educational initiatives, and giving back to the community through college scholarships and financial assistance to those in need.

The New York Times Communities Fund

For more than 100 years, The New York Times Communities Fund has supported people in need through generous donations from our readers. These funds are distributed by organizations that provide direct assistance.

Educational Initiatives

The New York Times Company supports a number of education initiatives that teach students about the world and the news media from young age into adulthood.

The New York Times College Scholarship Program

The New York Times College Scholarship Program provides four-year scholarships, mentoring and internship opportunities for recipients.

Campaign for Journalism

In 2022, The Times Company launched a voluntary employee philanthropic matching program to support three non-profit journalism organizations that fund independent journalism in the U.S. and protect press freedom abroad. In this first year, the program had hundreds of donors from across the company and raised funds for the Committee to Protect Journalists, American Journalism Project and Racial Equity in Journalism Fund. The company also matched employee donations and made an additional donation.

Supplier Relationships

We seek to work with suppliers who provide the best combination of price, quality, capability, service, delivery and performance to meet our needs and expectations. Successful relationships respect diversity, the environment and sustainability, and we seek those values in our agencies, business partners and suppliers.

Corporate Governance

The New York Times Company believes strong governance practices are essential to executing our strategy, creating long-term value and maintaining the trust of our stakeholders. We believe strong corporate governance is a critical component of our corporate culture.

Our Board has ultimate responsibility for oversight of our ESG practices, policies and initiatives, with certain standing committees maintaining oversight of component areas. The Board and its committees, as applicable, receive regular updates from a cross-functional management leadership team that has the day-to-day responsibility for these matters.
